2014 Ashley Schlag Memorial Soccer Scholarship
Recipient: Ali Caron
March 15, 2014

Congratulations Ali!

Ali has been active in sport playing soccer for the last seven years and was invited to the Regional/National Development Center of the MSA in 2010. In addition to possessing the talent and dedication it takes to compete in sport at a provincial level, Ali has also been active in promoting important human-rights causes through taking leadership roles in fundraising activities. Teachers and coaches often relied on her leadership abilities and Ali is currently an assistant coach for the Glenlawn Collegiate Grade 9 girls’ basketball team.

Ali’s sports career has been challenged by two serious knee injuries that took her out of competition at critical times. Rather than focus on the unfairness of her situation, Ali put the needs of others first and focused on supporting her teammates, continuing to attend training and matches.

Ali’s thoughtfulness, caring disposition, dedication to sport, and positive attitude in face of adversity are synonymous with the Ashley Schlag Memorial Scholarship selection criteria.

Ali plans on attending the University of Winnipeg in the fall to begin studies in kinesiology with a long-term goal of becoming a physiotherapist. Her vision is to support young athletes through training and injury prevention. We are honoured to have Ali join Emma and Sydni as a recipient of this scholarship. These are young Manitoban women with bright futures; futures we are privileged to have had some small part in supporting.

In appreciation...

And a very special thank-you to all this year's applicants. Reading through your applications made us realize what a special young women are involved in the sport Ashley loved so much. It was a difficult decision and we wish all of you could have won!

We would like to thank our inaugural corporate sponsors for their continued support: Dawson Kennels and Season’s Funeral Chapel.

We would also like to recognize the assistance offered by the Manitoba Soccer Association, especially Rob Gale for his sincere commitment to honouring Ashley’s memory.

Thanks to Wayne Hendry of Quicksilver Signs and Graphics, and Galaxy Printing for their generous support!

Thank-you to the wonderful soccer community that was so special to Ashley. It has been through the efforts and generosity of so many friends and family that we are able to continue to award this scholarship annually.
